There are many misconceptions about wind damage on asphalt shingles that still persist, despite being a common problem on a just-as-common roofing system. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Century Roofing and Siding Ltd. debunks common misconceptions about wind damage on asphalt shingles.

Wind Damage Isn’t Always Visible

While damage caused by wind is part of the problems caused by storms, high-speed winds can cause damage on their own. This is sometimes referred to by roofers as “wind-lifted” damage, and it’s anything but invisible if you take a closer look.

The most common sign is a horizontal crease that appears about an inch right below the edge of the shingle above it. This happens when wind lifts the edge of the shingle, then lifts it upward and folds it. The more pronounced the fold, the more visible the crease. Roofing manufacturers pre-apply adhesives under the shingle edges to counter wind lift. When comparing roofing products, it’s worth asking your roofing contractor if they offer these features on their asphalt shingles.

You Can Put Off Wind Damage Repair

Wind damage might not look as severe as storm damage, but it doesn’t mean you can put off roof repair, given that roofs are constantly exposed to the elements. This means the longer you put off roof repairs, the bigger the damage can become.

Wind-lifted asphalt shingles, in particular, can expose its underside to rainwater infiltration that can result in roofing leaks. The granules on the asphalt shingles can also be stripped at the creases, which increases the shingles’ vulnerability to UV damage. You should also consider that minor repairs typically cost less.

Wind-Damaged Roofing Has to Be Replaced

Roof replacement should be considered a last resort when dealing with roofing damage of any kind. Some people skip to soliciting roof replacement estimates without at least having their roof inspected by a professional. It often leads to unnecessary, even premature, roof replacement, especially when replacing a few asphalt shingles would have sufficed.

A roofing professional can help you come up with a repair and maintenance plan after a thorough roofing inspection. In addition to eliminating any second-guessing on what to do with your roof, it also helps you focus your roofing expenses.
